“So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable.”- Christopher Reeve

What are dreams?

“Show me a thoroughly satisfied man and I will show you a failure.” These words of the great scientist Thomas A. Edison, imply that in order to progress, one should not be satisfied. In other words we should have aspirations to do better and become better. These aspirations become our dreams and passion. To live your life to the fullest, one key factor you need to remember is the size of your dreams. If your dreams are small, you will miss many things in life. You will miss them not because they are out of your reach, but because your limiting beliefs hinder you from reaching them. “If nobody doubts your dream, it’s not ambitious enough.” said Zachary Reid. Your life is too precious to be spent pursuing small dreams. Dream big so that you can reach your full potential. Let’s see the attributes of dreams and how to convert them into reality.

Dream should be clear

At the very outset, you need to clearly define exactly what your dreams are. This is not the time to deal in generalities; you need to be very specific. It is not enough to say “I want to lose weight”. It should specify how much should be your weight and by which date. One of the best ways is to write down a detailed description of exactly what you want to accomplish. The feelings about the kind of life you will lead, are your greatest source of motivation and energy.

Take action to realize your dream

Now that you can see and feel your dreams with clarity, it’s time to begin moving toward them. What steps do you need to take to move you closer to realizing these dreams? What action can you take each and every day to keep you moving in the right direction? Make a time plan and check your progress at each stage. Remember persistence and continuity are the keys, don’t let the momentum break. I am reminded of the words of Walt Disney, “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”

Imagine the fulfillment of your dream

Imagine how wonderful you would feel when your dream becomes a reality. If your dream was a beautiful new home, don’t see it from the outside; see yourself in the middle of that beautiful dream house. See yourself living there, going about your daily activities, feeling completely at home and comfortable. If you have been actively moving toward a new career, visualize yourself actually performing the duties of that career.

Expect challenges ahead.

In working on your dreams, prepare yourself to meet difficulties. Expect challenges ahead. That way you won’t lose heart when difficulties come. You will be able to keep going. If failure comes in your way, take it as a stepping stone to success. People will tell you “you can’t do it”, become deaf to them. When confronted with obstacles remember,” When the going gets tough, the tough get going”. The ‘burning desire’ to actualize your dream should be so strong, that nothing should be able to stop you.

Dream come true

There is a friend of mine Ashok, who was working as an Insurance adviser. He nurtured a dream to buy a car. He saw an ad of Honda City car in a magazine. He was so fascinated by the bright red color that he cut out the ad and pasted it on the mirror of his dressing table. He used to see it every day and the image got engraved in his mind. He wrote the date on which he would buy the Honda City, on the ad pasted on the mirror. He went to the Honda showroom and took a test drive of the car. Ashok was so impressed that he booked the car by depositing the initial amount. He inquired about the cost and made a plan to earn the money in one year. He increased the number of calls daily and worked with increased enthusiasm .Each day he felt that he was reaching closer to realizing his dream. Finally the day came when Ashok checked his bank balance and found that he had enough money to pay for the car. He went to the dealer to buy the red car of his dreams. Unfortunately the dealer did not have the red color available, so he asked Ashok to choose another color. But Ashok insisted on the red color only, so the dealer asked him to come next week. But somehow not a single car of red color was received in the new stock. The dealer asked Ashok why he was particular about the red color. Ashok showed the ad which he had pasted on the mirror, and narrated the story behind his dream. The dealer was amazed to see the ad.He said that when this model of Honda City was launched, a red color car was sent to his showroom. The photograph of that red car was used for the ad and it was placed in his showroom, where it stands till now. He said”I never knew there is so much power in dreams! I will happily give this red car to you and place a car of another color in the showcase.”

As rightly said by our former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, “Dream is not that which you see while sleeping it is something that does not let you sleep.” Once your dream becomes your passion, it engulfs you from all directions .Then you start living the dream, your mind keeps racing ahead to fulfill it, and all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it. It would be apt to conclude with the words of Eleanor Roosevelt “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
